Emma Swan of Hansel and Gretal (OUAT)

I am sure many of have watched ABC's Once Upon a Time, if you haven't and plan to watch them soon then please do not read this blog because there will be spoilers.

To those who have watched, I ask you to remember the episode titled "True North". It is the one with Hansel and Gretel, yes the one right after the episode where Emma becomes sheriff. There is something that has been catching my eye for a long time and no one else seems to notice. So I am bringing it up here.

Now there are of course many versions of the original story. There is the first Grimm brothers version, then the one for children, and so on. I myself acquired a copy of Grimm fairy tales during my college years. In this book, the story involves a duck helping the children cross a river after they escaped witch. For the longest time I thought it was a swan and maybe there is a version with a swan, but I could be wrong. If anyone does find that version please let me know.

Anyways, the duck helps the children get to the other side of the river and the children go along their merry way to find their father, who they find and live happily ever after.

I had for the longest time believed it was a swan that helped them across. So when I thinking back to this episode or rewatching it. I think that Emma belongs in this story as well. She helped Ava and Nicholas (Gretel and Hansel) avoid the foster system (the river) and reunite them with their dad. Swans aren't ducks, I know. However, they are both water birds, in their own right. Biologists can attack me all you want on this one. Nevertheless, Emma (the swan/duck) helps the children cross the river and find their dad.
